Veterans for Walden Coalition Launches
Vets Cite Walden’s Dedication, Determination and Results in
Support of Critical Veterans’ Issues |
|
Medford, OR – Today, a diverse group of veterans crossing
political and generational lines joined together to endorse Greg
Walden for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives from
Oregon’s 2nd Congressional District.
One of Greg’s primary objectives in Congress is to ensure that the
brave Americans who wear our nation’s uniform and secure our freedom
have the resources they need when they’re in combat and the services
they need when they leave the battlefield. That’s why he supported
much-needed equipment upgrades and an across-the-board pay raise for
our active duty military and a substantial increase in funding for
veterans’ medical services, a $2.6 billion increase over last year to
a record $24.5 billion.
He also fought for three long years to save the Southern Oregon
Rehabilitation Center and Clinics from closure. His work alongside the
citizens of southern Oregon not only saved the facility, but also
culminated in its planned expansion as recently announced by
Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson during an event
in White City
last month. In this photo (right) Greg meets with Secretary Nicholson
and Dr. Andy Mebane of the SORCC to discuss the expansion plans.
“Too often in the past, Washington seemed to forget the promises it
had made to our nation’s veterans. We’ve been righting that wrong over
the last few years in an unprecedented way by improving access to
health care and increasing disability and retirement benefits. While
more work remains, we’ve made very real progress,” said Walden.
“With every military engagement comes new challenges for those
involved. It is critical that the country takes care of the special
needs of our veterans returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our
VA has tremendous, new technologies and therapies to help our veterans
recover. Congress needs to make sure every veteran who needs help gets
it,” said Walden.
Following are quotes from veterans from every corner of the 2nd
Congressional District, every major military battle since WWII, and
from both political parties. They represent the breadth and depth of
support among Oregon veterans for Congressman Walden.
Congressman Walden is currently serving his fourth term
representing the people of the Second Congressional District of
Oregon, which includes 20 counties in central, southern, and eastern
Oregon. He serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce as
well as the Committee on Resource, where he chairs the Subcommittee on
Forests and Forest Health. He was re-elected in 2004 with 72% of the
vote in a four person race. He and his wife, Mylene, have owned and
operated radio stations in the Columbia Gorge for more than 20 years.
Their son, Anthony, begins his junior year this fall at Hood River
Valley High School.

“Veterans all across southern Oregon owe
a huge debt of gratitude to Congressman Walden for his leadership in
keeping the Dom facility open. While many people played a hand in this
success, we needed a champion in Washington, DC who would carry our
message straight to the VA. He was tireless in this effort.” |

“Some politicians will cast a vote in
support of veterans and call it a day. To Greg Walden, supporting
Oregon veterans means a lot more. I’ve seen him go the extra mile time
and time again on the issues that really matter to us. That’s the sign
of somebody who truly cares.” |

“I work very closely with veterans on
issues that matter to them personally. So, I can spot politicians who
give us lip service from those who are personally committed to making
life better for Oregon vets. Greg Walden is personally committed to
veterans and their cause. You won’t find anybody holding office
anywhere who works harder on our behalf. I’m proud to support him.” |

“When I think of what our men and women
in uniform have endured over the years – time away from family,
permanent disability, and even death – it’s important for me to have a
Member of Congress who understands and appreciates these unique
sacrifices. Greg Walden has a spirit of public service and a
dedication to our state and nation that honors our veterans. I support
him because he shares our values.” |

“If it had not been for Congressman
Walden's actions we might have lost the Domiciliary at White City.

substance abuse counseling. Oregon veterans are fortunate to have Greg
Walden representing them in Congress.” |

Dan Hulbert, U.S. Marine Corps, Desert Storm veteran and founder of
Caring for Troops, resident of Bend |
